The major countries of Europe, Middle East and Africa experienced steady year-on-year handset growth in the first quarter of 2012, with only the Spanish market shrinking year-on-year. In smartphone-centric Europe Samsung and Apple continued to grow their market shares, mainly at the expense of Nokia, which has seen its Windows Phone-based Lumia range get off to a slow start. However, Nokia is doing a better job of holding-off Samsung and Apple in more price-sensitive countries such as Russia and South Africa.
