China Overtakes United States as Worlds Largest Smartphone Market in Q3 2011
China smartphone shipments grew 58% sequentially to reach a record 24 million units in Q3 2011, overtaking the United States for the first time ever to become the world’s largest smartphone market by volume. China’s rise has been driven by a blend of enriched smartphone portfolios from multinational and local brands, some heavily subsidized models driving down retail prices, and aggressive promoting of 3G data plans by operators. Nokia and Symbian lead in China, while Samsung, Apple, ZTE, Huawei and HTC are upping their game with high-end and low-end models.
