Despite the considerable challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the global market for smart speakers and displays continued to grow in Q1 2020 with shipments rising 8.2% to 28.2 millions units. Chinese demand weakened considerably during the quarter as the effects of the nationwide lockdown took hold while North America and Western Europe saw an uptick in demand for display based products towards the end of quarter as consumers prepared for extended periods at home. Much uncertainty lies ahead of course but the current stay at home conditions present an opportunity for smart speaker vendors and voice assistant operators to reinforce the value propoition of voice first experiences.
