Consumer spending on smart home related hardware declined to $41 billion in 2020 from $49 billion in 2019 due to the economic downturn driven by widespread business shutdowns caused by COVID-19. However, spending will increase in 2021 to $63 billion and continue to grow at a 16% CAGR to $86 billion in 2025 accounting for almost 50% of total smart home spending. In 2025 smart bulbs will generate the largest volume of unit sales followed by electrical devices and smart appliance controllers. Surveillance cameras became the top revenue generating category in 2020 due in part to their popularity during the pandemic and will hold that spot in 2025 as well. Electrical devices and smart bulbs will hold the #2 and #3 spots respectively in 2025.
