Poor video streaming experiences are often the result of congestion either in the ‘last mile’ access networks due to heavy traffic or in the ‘last yard’ home Wi-Fi network due to weak signals and high packet loss. Many of these issues are often regarded as Internet Service Provider (ISP) or CDN caching problems, but we are now seeing a paradigm shift whereby device manufacturers are taking bandwidth issues into their own hands and incorporating technologies to improve video throughput thereby overcoming some of the capability constraints of the Internet and the home network. This White Paper examines some of the challenges in streaming video across fixed and mobile networks with a focus on 4K video, and looks at the approaches taken by ecosystem players to improve the experience.
