Global Game Console Forecast 2005-2017
The dust has settled from major gaming conventions this summer and anticipation is high for the release of Microsoft and Sony's next generation consoles next month. Shipments of Game Consoles will shrink once again in 2013, reaching 28 million as the current generation consoles approach the end of their lifecycles and the launch dates of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One leave only six weeks to make up for lost time. We expect a significant uptick in console shipments in 2014 as the Wii U matures and PS4 and Xbox One find their footing. Though the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One hold great potential to advance gaming and home entertainment to new heights, we estimate that casual gamers will not make their way back to the front lines of the console war as they did for the Wii and PlayStation 2 before it, leaving core gamers to decide this latest battle. This report forecasts Global Game Console shipments by brand from 2013 to 2017 and includes historic data from 2005 to 2012. The report also includes Game Console shipments, installed base, and retail value by region from 2005 to 2017.
