North American shipments of Connected TV devices reached a record 111 million units in 2020 following a 13% surge during Q4. Shipment growth in 2020 was at its highest level for six years as demand for smart TVs and media streaming players climbed sharply. Locked down consumers sought comfort in big screen entertainment and the additional injection of fiscal stimulus checks in the US resulted in millions of consumers upgrading their existing TVs or buying additional sets to cater for the viewing needs of multiple family members. The pandemic induced lockdown also resulted in a surge in screen time for video and TV particularly with regards to time spent watching subscription streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+. Millions of households signed up to a video streaming service for the first time during lockdown. This added further motivation to upgrade and adopt new connected TV devices in order to access those services.
