Global game console shipments grew 11.3% in 2021 to 42.4 million units as the popularity of gaming reached new heights in the wake of the global pandemic. Consumer demand for the latest generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft has been high but supply chain constraints have hindered console production, resulting in low inventory levels and empty retail shelves. Nintendo had another good year thanks to the phenomenally successful Switch family of consoles which welcomed a new edition in the form of Switch OLED during the year. However, Nintendo has also been impacted by supply chain issues and it anticipates ongoing challenges through at least the first half of 2022. Moving forwards we anticipate continued annual shipment growth over the next two years driven by the ongoing upgrade cycle, falling prices and new Nintendo hardware in 2023.
This report includes historical data and forecasts for game console shipments, installed base, household penetration, average price and market value by region and country from 2012 to 2026.
