The global smartphone and tablet slim modem market continued to show weakness, coming it at  $654 million in revenue in Q2 2016.  Qualcomm once again led the slim modem market with 90 percent revenue share in Q2 2016, followed by Intel and Samsung LSI.  Qualcomm continues to leverage its strong LTE and LTE-Advanced modem technologies to gain share in the slim modem market.
The term slim modem used in this report refers to a stand-alone baseband (communications) processor that would require an external applications processor if used in a device running an operating system with UI for most software applications; using a stand-alone, external apps processor separate from the communications processor allows higher multimedia performance in tablets and premium smartphones.  This report tracks the smartphone, tablet, feature phone and non-handset slim modem unit shipments, ASPs and revenues of major baseband chip vendors on an annual basis and includes estimates up to Q3 2016.
