Smartphone AP Vendor Share by CPU Core Count 2018: Octa-Core Dominates as Single-Core Disappears

Report Summary:

Multi-core applications processors (APs), first introduced in smartphones in 2011, gained strong traction over the last few years and accounted for 100 percent of smartphone AP shipments in 2018 as shipments of single-core processors finally reduced to zero. Octa-core APs overtook quad-core APs to become the dominant multi-core category in 2017. Octa-core APs, driven by Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung LSI and HiSilicon, accounted for just over two-thirds of total smartphone AP shipments in 2018. This report tracks global smartphone AP vendors’ shipments by CPU core count for 18 AP vendors from 2008 to 2018 on an annual basis.
