Cellular baseband revenues reached $11.04 billion in 2009, down about 0.7% compared to 2008 as ASPs (average selling prices) fell about 9.4% due to increased competition in the market. Shipments of baseband chips to handset and non-handset markets increased by 9.5% to 1563.0 million in 2009 as the market showed signs of recovery in the second half of 2009. Qualcomm led the market with 39.7% share of baseband revenues in 2009, up from 36.8% in 2008. Infineon continued to improve its W-CDMA baseband share on the strength of its design-wins at Apple, LG and Samsung and the company took a 10.2% share of W-CDMA baseband revenues in 2009, a significant improvement over its 4.7% 2008 position. MediaTek and ST-Ericsson dominated the nascent Chinese TD-SCDMA baseband market in 2009, scoring multiple tier-1 design-wins. This report details the market shares in unit and revenue terms for the top 12 baseband chip vendors by quarter for the last two years and also provides provisional estimates for the first quarter of 2010.
