Terrestrial Opportunities for Compound Semiconductor Photovoltaics
Increasing demand for green energy solutions that will replace the global dependence on fossil fuels is pushing terrestrial photovoltaics into ever increasing commercial applications in many countries with almost 200GW forecast to be installed worldwide by 2016. The terrestrial photovoltaics market is expected to be worth over $125 billion in 2016, with conventional Si-based technology still dominating close to 75% of new installations. III-V compound semiconductor based concentrator photovoltaics for terrestrial applications finally started to gain momentum during 2011 and newly installed power will grow at a compound annual average growth rate of 75% from 2011-2016 and account for just below 5% of the total terrestrial photovoltaics market.
