Report Summary:

It has recently become fashionable to downplay the significance and long-term prospects for GaAs in the RF device market. As the story goes, silicon CMOS will consume the small signal and lower power regime and power technologies like GaN and LDMOS will clean up any higher power applications that still use GaAs devices. In recent months, the GaN community has gotten even more aggressive by discussing plans to bring the cost of GaN-on-silicon-based devices to levels where they will be the devices of choice for all functions, regardless of the power level. There are compelling arguments for and against all of these technologies and the growth trajectories they will experience in the future. This insight looks at a snapshot of the RF market revenue, segmented by frequency and output power level, to draw conclusions about the challenges and opportunities for a number of the RF semiconductor technologies.
