Report Summary:

This report looks at the development of laser scanning sensors which are typically used by autonomous or highly-automated vehicles. They provide the detailed depth map of their surroundings in order to avoid collisions with curb stones, lamp posts, sign posts, pedestrians and other vehicles. It follows on from an earlier report on autonomous driving published in August 2014, which suggests that auto makers are adopting a step-by-step approach in gradually increasing autonomy from existing ADAS applications. Concept vehicles are currently using high resolution, but highly costly sensors. Strategy Analytics believes that the development of such sensors should also adopt a step-by-step approach, starting with more affordable sensors with acceptable resolutions.
