In 2021, automotive semiconductor demand is forecast to see a steep return to growth with the market forecast to grow by 23.3% as demand for vehicles returns across all regions augmented by continued momentum towards electrification. This forecast outlook includes an anticipation of vehicle production stabilising globally, but there are risks associated with additional waves of the COVID-19 pandemic hitting regional production centers and being compounded further by a shortage in semiconductor supply. Driven by sharp increases in demand from consumer electronics and other end markets, the semiconductor shortage has been further impacted by a number of other events including an earthquake in Japan and snowstorms in Texas impacting semiconductor production in the first quarter of 2020. A fire at a Renesas facility and a severe drought in Taiwan is also expected to impact semiconductor supply in 2021.

Risks notwithstanding, the estimated compound average annual growth rate (CAAGR) over the 5 year period 2020 to 2025 will reach +12.5% with the global automotive semiconductor market (including semiconductor-based sensors) forecast to reach $81.2 billion by 2028.
