Strickland and LaHood Distracting Us Again

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was at it again last week – calling for a ban on the use of mobile phones in cars. Administrator David Strickland – keynoting at the SAE World Congress – actually questioned NHTSA’s authority to institute a ban while U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood – speaking at a distracted driving summit in San Antonio – was quoted by Reuter’s renewing the call for a Federal ban. (NHTSA later averred that Secretary LaHood was misquoted by Reuter’s, according to an Automotive News reporter.) These pronouncements highlight the fact that U.S. regulators are either leading the way in trying to ‘guide’ in-vehicle user experiences, or are completely out of step with the rest of the world and technological advances. All indications are that U.S. regulators are out of step.
