Widespread Use of SMS and Email While Driving

Report Summary:

Despite legislation banning the use of handheld phone calls and text messages in many regions, drivers continue to perform these tasks on a daily basis. While much attention has been given to teen drivers, especially in regards to text messaging, survey results show that drivers under 45 exhibit in some cases similar behavior as teen drivers. Smartphone owners are more likely to read and compose text messages and engage in handheld calls on a daily basis than non-smartphone owners. With legislation not eliminating consumer behavior, OEMs must implement safer alternatives for drivers to read and write text messages and emails while overcoming the public relations backlash.
