An average person in the US sends five SMSs for each phone call they place. 40% of American drivers recognise they read messages whilst driving multiple times per week, and an even more frightening 17% compose text messages daily also whilst at the wheel. Considering this data, it is surprising that most OEMs continue to focus on supporting the management of phone calls whilst driving but haven’t attempted to support messaging by text and other platforms with minimal distraction using in-vehicle interfaces. Those that have tried, fell short compared to the benchmark set by the mirroring systems. This insight also provides five basic considerations to improve the in-vehicle messaging experience.
