Assessing the Risks of Cognitive Distraction in the Car

Report Summary:

Since NHTSA’s guidelines regarding visual-manual distraction for embedded systems were released, focus has been shifting to the dangers of cognitive distraction. A high profile study suggesting that speech recognition and cognitive distraction are serious issues garnered significant attention. However, naturalistic studies still suggest that visual-manual distraction negatively impacts crash risk, without any evidence that cognitive distraction does. Methodological issues between the different studies can help explain the apparent contradictions and guide future design decisions.
