Apple had its best ever second quarter, posting quarterly revenue of $35.0 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.8 billion. In this report, we focus on four of Apple’s reporting segments: iPod, Mac Desktop and Mac Portable, and Other Hardware (Apple TV). Mac Desktop, Mac Portable, iPod and Apple TV accounted for 19% of the revenue in this quarter. Speculations surrounding the arrival of new products led to lower than expected Mac sales in the second quarter. Sales of iPods continue to decline both in terms of volume (-10% y-o-y) and value (-20 y-o-y), suggesting consumers are gravitating towards less expensive iPods. Looking forward, Apple has drawn the battle lines with Ultrabook manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Acer and Sony by lowering the price of MacBook Air and launching OS X Mountain Lion.
