SpecTRAX has catalogued specs for over 2100 smartphones to date. Since the introduction of the smartphone the number of models announced each month has remained pretty stable; however there is a notable increase in specs and a decrease in the mobile phone (feature phone and mobile voice) announcements. The major brands such as Samsung have demonstrated a preference for the smartphone, as has ZTE. During January and February 2012 smartphone specs and announcements leapt up from the previous year, and mobile phone (feature phones and basic voice) showed a sustained decline. In response to these trends this insight details the shift in product announcements from mobile phones to smartphones, and primarily the rise of the smartphone. Tablet announcements have shown an aggressive introduction too, which continues on a skyward trajectory; tablet announcements are charted but will be the focus of a future insight.
