179 new phones and tablets were announced in February 2012, a 33 percent increase over the previous month, with the majority of smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress, featuring high level specs. However an almost equal amount of lower spec’d mobile phones from manufacturers such as Celkon (who contributed 20% of the new models) were also released. These releases had a knock on effect, lowering average handset specification. Highlights from February 2012 were the arrival of Nokia’s 41MP camera in the 808 PureView, a continued reduction in handset thickness to a mere 7.8mm for the Panasonic ELUGA smartphone, and traction for Android OS v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Processor speed continues to increase with dual and quad core processors becoming commonplace.
