Summary

This forecast covers the consumer electronics (CE) devices as potential beneficiaries of 3G and 4G wireless service access. We project that 181 million embedded Wireless consumer electronics devices will be installed in the US by 2015, up from our previous forecast of 163 million units, primarily comprised of tablets, notebook computers and E-Book readers. This report builds on Strategy Analytics’ Connected CE Devices forecast models to provide demand and adoption forecasts for Embedded Wireless Consumer Electronics devices in the US through 2015. The report models demand for 17 3G- and 4G-enabled consumer device segments, including tablets, netbooks, notebooks, mobile internet devices, handheld and fixed games consoles, e-books, portable media players, set-top boxes and blu-ray players. It includes technology segmentation forecasts (CDMA, EDGE/WCDMA, HSPA+, and LTE) for each device category. While the vast majority of 3G and 4G wireless embedded devices will be portable, we have included a number of fixed CE devices which we believe could potentially gain value from some 3G and 4G connectivity to control the system remotely, or to facilitate converged services. In many cases, this value is likely to be limited. This forecast is an update of the same report published in October 2011 labelled Embedded Wireless (3G/4G) CE Devices US Market Forecast. For the purposes of this report, WWAN implies a Wireless Wide Area Network using mobile telecommunication cellular network technologies such as 3G and 4G. This differs from a sister report which covers the same product categories, but provides segmentation by WLAN - A Wireless Local Area Network or Wi-Fi, which is the standard on which we forecast.
