September update for Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking; the new name for T-Wireless

Our subscribers will note that we have now changed the name of our range of database and benchmarking services, including that of T-Wireless. While all the services remain the same, in terms of both functionality and coverage, the name changes have been implemented to better convey what each service provides. As from September, T-Wireless is now known under the new name of Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking.

The latest update to the service, which is now available to download, points to a continual evolution of mobile broadband pricing, with the number of mobile broadband packages covered within the service growing from 2,419 in June 2011 to 2,624 in September 2011, an increase of almost 9%.

Much of this increase can be attributed to two specific trends. The first is that of SIM-only plans, which do not include any PC, tablet or modem as part of the deal. While these plans have been appearing on the radar for a while, there has been a significant hike in the number of offerings, which now account for almost 20% of the plans in Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking. This is by no means an even playing field, of course. Some countries have really pushed SIM only, while others are much more lukewarm to the idea. Two notable examples of countries that have embraced SIM-only in a big way are Australia and Poland. One of the likely drivers of this trend is that communications equipment, in the form of PCs and tablets is increasingly accessible through a variety of channels, and users simply do not want to be restricted to their operator for provision, particularly when it is accompanied by expensive and stifling longer term contracts.

Another trend that we note is that of 4G or LTE plans, which are now being rolled out across a number of countries as services come online, including Austria, Denmark, Japan, Norway and, of course, the US. While such plans are typically priced higher than their 3g counterparts, they offer much higher download speeds and more generous monthly allowances. In addition, several appear to offer genuinely unlimited download – at least for the time being.

A final area that is making its presence felt in mobile broadband plans is that of WiFi hotspot access, which provide additional internet access for consumers on the go. Such ‘add-ons’ are an attractive selling point to users in terms of coverage and potentially service quality – users will often complain about quality of service in built up areas. Not only this, but WiFi offload will also help users preserve their monthly data allowance, which will be increasingly important as the way we access the internet on the go evolves. Naturally, it isn’t just consumers who benefit, as WiFi helps operators offload traffic from increasingly overburdened networks. Around 16% of our 2600+ plans covered now include WiFi hotspots.
