Summary

Although SMS will remain the most dominant form of mobile messaging over the next five years, emerging ‘over the top’ messaging applications are providing users with increased choice, and changing their messaging behaviors. Strategy Analytics believes that these developments represent a significant threat to operators’ SMS revenues. Heavy messengers in both the US and UK are likely to send more messages on their phone using forms of messaging other than SMS. In order to provide a superior messaging experience, messaging services should have the capability of sending multiple forms of content, allow for enhanced group messaging, integrate presence management through context awareness and be linked with location services.
