Summary

Global smartphone shipments again grew almost 76% annually in the second quarter of 2011. Android is now the number one operating system (O/S) in the world with 48% share. It is now number one in all regions save Africa Middle East and Central Eastern Europe. Symbian finally lost the number one spot in Asia Pacific and Blackberry lost its number one rank in Latin America. Apple’s iOS surpassed Symbian and is now the number 2 O/S globally. Growth largely came from Asia Pacific as it recorded 300% annual growth threatening Symbian’s No. 2 position in the region. This report details the change of operating system market share and unit shipments for major regions of the world, including North America, Central & Latin America, Western Europe, Central & Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa Middle East.
