China Mobile impacts the entire m-ICT industry through its huge scale – to some degree already, and massively in the future. In 2010 CM had close to 600m subscribers in China, while the entire Mobile subscriber base in North America and West Europe was not much bigger: 760m. CM operates in a market where the Operator’s walled gardens still have great traction, offering huge VAS opportunities. CM’s most obvious strategic impact is on Mobile vendors to the TD-SCDMA standard and in future to the TD-LTE standard. If CM expands internationally, and as its centralization program (‘One China Mobile’) develops further, a contract with CM could eventually mean a contract to supply the majority of subscribers in China plus multiple large overseas markets. For Mobile Operators there will be huge longer-term impact if CM expands internationally and takes a lead role among multi-market Operators, challenging their scale and global reach advantages. In Computing, the same principles apply as in Mobile, with the difference that China may even more rapidly acquire scale in Computing than in Mobile as Computing is more standardized than for Mobile.
