Telefonica’s impact derives from its Group/international scale and its strength in its home Spain market across Mobile and non-Mobile sectors. Telefonica’s peer group is that of the former major European incumbents DT, FT and Telecom Italia. It is similar to its peers in specific respects but it differs in its reach into developing markets and its profitability. Telefonica’s tie with China Unicom creates a powerful potential for large-scale sourcing of handset devices/Apps/OS and infrastructure, including low-priced products from China. Telefonica’s strong presence in Latin America will create opportunities for Computing Hardware/Apps and OS vendors in this market, as Telefonica strives to sustain margins by moving beyond Mobile Voice towards Mobile Data in a region where Fixed Data access is limited. To a degree this same impact will be felt in China.
