Summary

Smart devices will become an important component of winning handset OEMs strategies in 2008. The hottest technologies will be 3G devices offering a mix of WLAN, GPS, and HSDPA, and smart devices will be the flagship device delivering the most compelling array of these technologies in 2008. Integrating the richest connectivity options, processing architectures, and enabling technologies, smart phones are increasingly viewed by operators as the surest way to maximize the likelihood of higher data usage. The growth outlook for the smart OS players shows this emphasis, as we project 2008 volume growth of 42% for Symbian, Microsoft and Research in Motion combined. Alternative-brand players will multiply their handset offerings and most if not all will be smart devices. Following Apple’s lead, these specialists will launch own-branded cellular devices to leverage their unique market positions. We expect handsets from Google, Garmin, and several other specialists with stronger brand positions in gaming, TV, and imaging applications/services. In the broader handset market, commoditization forces blur the line between the rapidly growing ULCH segment and the entry tier, while consolidation pressure mounts and smaller OEMS seek to gather up the last bit of scalable handset assets in the market.
