Verizon Wireless Puts Tablets, Smartphones Center Stage with New Data-Focused Pricing Plans
Share Everything Plans Target Multi-device Connected Future and Shift the Way to Sell Wireless
Boston, MA - June 14, 2012 - Verizon Wireless will launch new pricing plans on June 28, 2012, that will shake up the US wireless market with long-anticipated shared data plans restructuring pricing and bundling of voice, text and data.
According to the Strategy Analytics Mobile Broadband Opportunities (MBO) service report, "Shared Data Plans from Verizon Wireless 'Shifting the Way We Sell Wireless,'" the new "Share Everything" plans reach a new level of innovation, setting the stage for a future where most families own multiple devices and desire simplicity and flexibility connecting their devices to mobile networks.
Recognizing that demand for smartphones and use of tablets have become the norm, Verizon Wireless focused its new plans on an account-based structure with shared data among devices, making plan choice hone in on the level of data needed each month and the type of devices connecting on the account.
"The 'Share Everything' plan approach from Verizon Wireless is an excellent start to create a structure for a multi-device future as the connected ecosystem expands," observes Susan Welsh de Grimaldo, Director, Mobile Broadband Opportunities at Strategy Analytics. "We would like to see Verizon Wireless add the ability to set per device limits on data use—which could be a big plus, especially for a traveling parent who may need data for navigation and video chat, and needs to make sure that the family data cap isn’t depleted by kids watching videos."
Phil Kendall, Director, Wireless Operator Strategies, notes, "Making data usage levels the main decision for consumers when they select their mobile plan is a good forerunner to the move to Voice over LTE (VoLTE), where voice and messaging become part of the data stream. Setting unlimited voice and messaging as the baseline also protects operator revenues from bleeding to over-the-top (OTT) voice and messaging services."
