Satellite and cable providers on both sides of the Atlantic have raised the bar in recent weeks by claiming to offer full HD – ie 1080p – programming. The fact that they have referenced Blu-ray in their publicity has put the cat among the proverbial pigeons because the Blu-ray standard was always intended to be untouchable as a video quality industry benchmark. The Blu-ray Disc Association is fighting back with claims that satellite companies cannot technically match the Blu-ray experience and that it will do whatever it can to ensure that consumers are not being misled. It promises to be an interesting debate, and one that may begin in engineering circles and end in the law courts. Strategy Analytics believes that Blu-ray content providers and device vendors have little to fear: they should focus on developing emerging Blu-ray business models and improving the availability of Blu-ray content and devices. For the next few years at least, broadcast service providers are competing primarily amongst themselves, not against disc delivery platforms.
