Summary

ZigBee-certified chips have reached the market in customer-specific industrial and commercial applications shipping at the rate of millions of units per year. Meanwhile, Zensys has all but cornered the market in wireless residential control with its proprietary Z-wave chips. We believe that Zensys, with its simple mesh networking chips and relationships with leading residential system vendors, will maintain its early lead in the residential control market for at least the next two years. In contrast, ZigBee will grow fastest in commercial / industrial applications, which require up to thousands of nodes and significant application support. In the longer term, Strategy Analytics sees the residential market as the stage for a battle between ZigBee and Z-Wave. Which wireless control scheme wins will depend on future consumer requirements and the best means to meet those requirements.
