Consumers Need Convincing of the Benefits of Snooping TVs

Recent patent filings from Verizon and Microsoft highlight a trend towards new technologies that observe behaviors within the living room in order to deliver advanced TV experiences. In-depth consumer interviews undertaken by Strategy Analytics identified the main perceived benefit of such technologies would be to overcome consumer reluctance to log in to their TV. This would automate active functions such as parental control, content recommendation and targeted advertising. However, the initial reaction of most participants in this study to the concept of being observed in their homes was negative. To ensure adoption, we believe that further tangible benefits must be established and communicated to the consumer. In addition, natural concerns about privacy invasion and potential for hacking must be addressed.

Keywords: Verizon, Microsoft, BSkyB, TV, smart TV, intelligence, context awareness, ambient action, recommendations, advertising, dho

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1999

User Experiences for the Next Billion Smartphone Owners Emerge at MWC 2013

Strategy Analytics has previously identified Intelligence and Multiscreen as among the core themes that will define future differentiating smartphone experiences. Several examples of these trends were announced or promoted at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. However, in addition to new innovative initiatives that are set to deliver compelling experiences at the high end of smartphone technology, new devices and platforms that target differentiated experiences at new segments and price tiers were also a key theme of the show. This Insight examines solutions from Samsung, Huawei, NEC, HTC, ZTE, Fujitsu and Mozilla.

Keywords: MWC 2013, Fujitsu, HTC, Huawei, Mozilla, NEC, Orange, Samsung, Operating Systems, smartphone, Wireless, Consumer Behaviour

Increased Emphasis on Smart TV UX at CES 2013

While CES 2013 was once again dominated by new hardware announcements, especially in the 4K/Ultra HD space, more floor space and discussion this year was devoted to connected TV experiences. All of the major TV makers were promoting a Smart TV offering and some products - such as Samsung's newly redesigned interface - have improved substantially in terms of addressing user needs in a usable and engaging manner. However, in our opinion, solutions that will drive adoption of Smart TV into the mainstream remain elusive.

Keywords: CES, Smart TV, LG, Samsung, Accedo, iFeelSmart,DHO,xUser Behaviour

Consumers Want More Intelligent and Proactive Smartphones, with Granted Permission

In interviews with 49 users of intelligent applications and services, Strategy Analytics identified that a growing number of smartphone owners want devices which are more intelligent through contextual awareness, pattern recognition and learning. While we believe that these spaces represent opportunities for innovation and differentiation, developers must take privacy and user control expectations into account, given that issues of privacy and control are a continuing concern.

Keywords: Consumer Behaviour, Mobile Phone, Mobile Phone Connectivity, Mobile Security, Private cloud, Smart Accessories, Smart Home Applications, smartphone, Consumer, Infrastructure, Media, Services, Smart Home, Software, Wireless, Android, Apple, Google, YouTube

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1999

Resolution is Not Everything for Mobile Imaging Enthusiasts

Consumers use mobile devices routinely to capture meaningful moments or to document something for later recall and circumstances for taking images present themselves quickly and without a moment's notice. However, most consumers still prefer a dedicated camera for occasions where picture quality is of great importance. This attitude is not generally related solely to resolution - rather many believe that dedicated cameras offer better zooming, superior low-light handling capabilities and a more powerful flash. While it is more challenging to create a marketing message around qualitative assessments such as performance in low-light situations, our research suggests that this approach will be more likely to resonate with consumers for whom imaging quality on a smartphone is a key choice factor than megapixels alone.

Keywords: imaging, camera, cameraphone, resolution, megapixels, Consumer Behaviour

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

CES 2012: Innovative TV Controller Technologies Take Center Stage

A multitude of innovative technologies for controlling next-generation TVs were on display at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Equipment vendors LG and Samsung demonstrated products featuring voice and gesture control that will be commercially available this year, while enabling technologies providers including Primesense, SoftKinetic and Tobii took prominent positions in the show halls to present their offerings. Strategy Analytics experienced all of these technologies and we felt that most provide an incomplete solution to the challenges of optimizing the human-machine interface for next-generation TVs. LG's TV interface in particular is, in our opinion, about as far away from the optimal TV user experience as it is possible to be.

Keywords: TV, controller, voice, gesture, eye tracking, LG, Samsung, Primesense, Softkinetic, Omek, Macron, DHO, Connected TV, Digital Television, Smart TV, Consumer, LG, Samsung

One Quarter of Bluetooth Headset Owners Have No Intention of Buying Another

Only a third of Bluetooth headset owners intend to replace their headset within in the next twelve months, and more than a quarter say that they have no intention of ever buying another headset. Moreover, consumers are paying less for their Bluetooth headsets than they did a year ago, with more than half of mono headset buyers paying less than US$40. However, among those who are considering the purchase of a headset, interest in all stereo headsets, and especially in neckband styles, has increased. To succeed in this tough market, headset vendors should focus on ensuring positive online product reviews (both professional reviews and user reviews) since these are the most popular source of information in support of headset purchase decisions.

Keywords: Bluetooth, headset, purchase behavior, Consumer Behaviour

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

Mobile Internet and PC Browsing Behaviors Diverge

While mobile internet use is rising fast, the vast majority of mobile internet sessions continue to last less than 10 minutes. During these short sessions, the types of connected activity that consumers are more likely to undertake via the mobile device are time-critical information-seeking and person-to-person messaging. Other web activities that are more media-intensive or casual in nature are more likely to be carried out on a computing device with a larger screen. While smartphone owners are more likely to undertake these mobile connected activities via a dedicated mobile application, an opportunity exists to provide more apps for featurephone owners to improve their experience and thereby drive incremental data use.

Keywords: mobile internet, browsing, smartphone, featurephone, basic phone, behavior, Consumer Behaviour

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

CES Review: Multi-Screen Connected TV Experiences Take Center Stage at CES 2011

New product announcements and discussion at CES 2011 were dominated by two domains: internet-connected TVs and tablet devices. Strategy Analytics believes that the adoption of these technologies is set to accelerate rapidly as emerging behaviors involving the parallel use of these two products expand and evolve fuelled by third party innovation. This insight highlights key CES announcements that we believe will drive this trend, and summarizes our discussions and opinions on how providers can best meet the needs and expectations of consumers for a superior experience in this rapidly developing space.
Consumers Making Mobile Device Choice Earlier in Purchase Process

Visiting stores is the most popular activity that respondents use when considering which mobile device to purchase. In the US & Western Europe, regardless of age, operator retail stores are also the most popular point of sale for mobile device owners. There has been very little change in the popularity of operator retail stores as a place to buy phones in the US or Western Europe since 2006, even though online purchasing has increased dramatically in both regions. However, consumers have become more certain of their purchase decisions by the time they reach point-of-sale, which suggests that they are obtaining more information about mobile devices and technology earlier in the purchase process.

Keywords: mobile phone, operator, smartphone, featurephone, basic phone, operator, apple, blackberry, behavioural forecast, point of sale, Consumer Behaviour

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

Innovative Mobile Experiences Add Value and Support Differentiation

Four years after the launch of Apple's disruptive iPhone platform, competitive smartphone offerings have substantially closed the gap in terms of usability and, with the help of their applications ecosystems, the utility provided to users. As such, Strategy Analytics believes that consumer preferences and attitudes towards mobile technology are increasingly being shaped by offerings that provide innovative user experiences. This report examines four key trends that we believe represent the main areas of focus in delivering compelling innovations that will attract lead adopters in 2011 and beyond: Personalization, Context Awareness, Convergence and Advanced Human Machine Interface Innovation. In this report, we explore consumer interest in these emerging innovative experiences, and identify those players in the industry who are taking the lead in delivering offerings based on these trends.

Keywords: context awareness, personalization, convergence, user experience, best practice

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

IBC Review: Digital Media Management and Recommendation in the Spotlight

At the IBC conference and exhibition in Amsterdam, Strategy Analytics' Digital Home Observatory team attended several presentations and briefings with companies across the digital media value chain, to understand how their offerings are meeting the needs of consumers of OTT content, and enhancing the user experience of connected media solutions. Two key themes emerged from our many discussions: Where should digital content and connected services to the home sit - in the cloud, on a gateway, in individual devices, or all three? And, what is the most powerful type of recommendation for consumers to discover OTT content? This insight summarizes our discussions and opinions on these topics and outlines our future research plans in these areas. Companies mentioned include Pace, Advanced Digital Broadcast, APRICO, ioko, and Rovi.

Keywords: IBC, OTT, Pace, ADB, ioko, APRICO, Rovi, DHO

Strategy Analytics believes that Google TV meets many of the needs of consumers who are interested in consuming digital media on their TV screens such as an easily installed one-box solution, a simple apps-based menu structure and a QWERTY physical interface. However, to provide a truly compelling experience, and to improve upon the limited success of previous internet TV solutions in driving mainstream adoption of this technology, we believe that Google TV must provide access to all of a user's preferred content. In our view, this involves offering and emphasizing on-demand access to a wide range of professional content.

Keywords: DHO, Digital Home Observatory, Google TV, YouTube, digital media, catch-up TV, on demand TV
