OECD benchmarking reveals big variations between 3G and 4G speeds, less so in costs

The March 2013 update for the Teligen OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Service is now available. This short insight highlights some of the key trends emerging around 3G and 4G pricing and speeds. Service speeds have increased dramatically over the past 12 months, largely as a result of upgrades to 3G services, and the introduction of 4G services. The new services have brought with them an increase in price, although notably pricing of 4G is very much in line with 3G offerings.

Keywords: Mobile broadband, OECD, price benchmarking, 3G, 4G, Broadband, Laptops, LTE, OECD Baskets, Tablet, Benchmark, pricing, tariff, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

Stable prices and higher speeds for users in the latest Teligen OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmark

This short insight considers some of the results from the recently published OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Sevice from Teligen. Across the 40 countries covered within the service, residential users can expect to pay on average, between USD PPP 27 and USD PPP 69 per month for broadband and related services (phone and television), while the incremental cost of multiplay can increase the cost by up to 75%. The key change going forward is likely to be an increase in advertised download speeds, which continue to nudge upwards, as providers roll out higher-speed services, while slowly removing low-end ones. New users are likely to be able to benefit from promotional offers which will keep prices relatively stable, however, once outside of these offers, moderate price increases are likely.

Keywords: Broadband, double-play, Fiber, Fixed Telecoms, multiplay, OECD Baskets, Price Benchmarking, Telecommunications, TV, xDSL, Cable, Consumer, Networks, NGO, Retail, Service Providers, Services, Telecoms, multi-play, Triple Play, fixed broadband, OECD, price, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

Broadband Prices Driven by Increasing Speeds

This short insight considers some of the results from the recently published OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Service from Teligen. Across the 40 countries covered within the service, residential users can expect to pay on average, between USD PPP 27 and USD PPP 68 per month for broadband and related services (phone and television), while the incremental cost of multiplay can range from just over 8 USD PPP per month to in excess of 21 USD PPP per month. The key change going forward is likely to be an increase in advertised download speeds, which are nudging upwards. New users are likely to be able to benefit from promotional offers which will keep prices relatively stable, however, once outside of these offers, moderate price increases are likely.

Keywords: fixed broadband, pricing, benchmarking, OECD, Broadband, Cable, double-play, Fiber, multiplay, Cable, Consumer, Service Providers, Services, Telecoms, Benchmark, Multiplay, multi-play, pricing, tariff, Triple Play, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

A Period of Consolidation for Fixed Broadband

Broadband services offerings have moved into a period of consolidation, with gradual rather than dramatic changes to both pricing and service features. Based on an analysis current and past updates of Teligen's Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Service, we have observed relatively small shifts in the areas of price, download speeds and service bundling, with the majority of activity happening at the higher service end, e.g. higher speeds of standard and bundled services. This short insight looks at how different broadband service offerings have changed over the past quarter, as well as providing a snapshot of changes over the course of the last year.

Keywords: fixed broadband, pricing, benchmarking, tariff, broadband bundles, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

Handset Data Pricing April 2012 - continued evolution of plans and speeds

The latest update of the Handset Data Price Benchmarking system reveals the average advertised maximum download speed has increased by a third since August 2011, now reaching almost 9 Mb/s. In spite of this dramatic growth, download speeds still lag behind mobile broadband speeds in many countries, and are likely to for the foreseeable future. Wi-Fi hotspot access is an increasing feature of handset plans, now appearing in around 1 in 7 plans. In terms of pricing, the average cost for a 1GB data add-on is US$/PPP 14 per month.

Keywords: Teligen, OECD Mobile Voice Price Benchmarking, Handset Data Price Benchmarking, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, US, 3, Apple, AT&T, BlackBerry, Orange, SFR, Telekom Austria, Three UK, Vodafone, Networks, Service Providers, Wireless, Communications, Handsets, LTE, smartphone, Telecommunications, WiFi, Wireless, Mobile Data, Handset Data, Benchmark, iPhone, pricing, smartphone, tariff, wifi, xMBO

The Rise of Multiplay Services

Mulitplay services are increasingly being rolled out across the 40 countries covered in Teligen's Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Service, and now account for around half of all residential fixed broadband packages. From a user perspective, benefits include potential cost savings over individually purchased services and simplified contract management, while service providers are able to create user stickiness and explore new revenue streams through upsell and new service delivery and pricing models. This short insight looks at how prices of multiplay services compare to unbundled broadband, for different speeds of service.

Keywords: Broadband, Cable, Fixed Telecoms, Telecommunications, xDSL, CATV, Consumer, Infrastructure, Networks, Service Providers, Television, UPC, Stofa, TDC, Benchmark, Communications, Multiplay, pricing, tariff, Triple Play, multi-play, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

Service Provider Pricing Trends for New Connected Devices

Today, running two or three mobile devices, or even more, is very much the norm for many users. These devices are often complementary rather than any being a viable substitution for each other, and it is often not difficult for users to see the need for connectivity for each. But this extended connectivity brings with it additional costs, which can be hard to justify.

This presentation is an excerpt from Strategy Analytics' Breakfast Presentations at MWC 2012, and looks at some of the challenges that operators are facing in this increasingly connected world, and some of the pricing approaches they are taking.

Keywords: 3G, Communications, Handsets, LTE, Mobile Broadband, Mobile Broadband Devices, Mobile Internet, Mobile Phone, Mobile Voice, smartphone, Tablet, Telecommunications, USB Modems, MWC 2012, Mobile World Congress, Connected Devices, Handset, Data, Plans, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Handset Data Price Benchmarking, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, T-Data, Tariff Outlook, Mobile Voice Online Price Database, Handset Data Price Benchmarking, Fixed Voice Online Price Database, OECD Voice Price Benchmarking, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Teligen Consulting, Price Benchmarking, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

The Cost of Fibre-Based Broadband

Fibre services are increasingly being rolled out across the 40 countries covered in Teligen's Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Service, and now account for around a quarter of all fixed broadband packages. A key benefit to users of fibre services is the uplift in speed, compared to more traditional xDSL packages. This uplift in speed does not necessarily mean a corresponding high rise in the cost of the service, and when we look at how costs compare to traditional xDSL offerings, the findings are interesting. But while fibre services appear to offer the promise of high speed at relatively low cost, widespread availability remains limited and will be for some time to come. This short Insight looks at how prices of fibre services compare to traditional xDSL as well as cable, and examines some of the other issues that need to be taken into account.

Keywords: fibre, xDSL, cable, broadband, price benchmarking, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking
