BRICS-and-Mortar: Building Handset Retail Pricing Portfolios in Emerging Markets

Average PAYG retail handset pricing is highest in Brazil and lowest in India, irrespective of product type, with the remaining BRICS countries jostling for position in the middle ground, according to detailed analysis of handset retail prices in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The tax burden varies significantly between the BRICS countries and cannot be ignored, therefore additional analysis was performed to calculate and compare pre-tax pricing. Apple, RIM and HTC were the three vendors with the highest average retail prices of handsets across the territories. PriceTRAX is an online database service which monitors global handset retail pricing and can be accessed at www.strategyanalytics.com/pricetrax.

Keywords: Handsets, Mobile Phone, smartphone, Telecommunications, Price, emerging markets, iPhone, Portfolio, pricing, smartphone, tariff, tax, Alcatel-Lucent, Apple, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, Sony, Sony Ericsson

HOW MUCH?!: Predicting Smartphone Retail Pricing From Key Components

Smartphone retail price can be predicted by modelling historic tariff and handset pricing data combining Strategy Analytics' PriceTRAX and SpecTRAX databases. By comparing the components present in smartphones available "free of charge" (FOC) on 24 month tariffs in the UK it was possible to predict the average monthly tariff a particular set of specs would be on. Using statistical techniques a simple tariff calculator for UK Smartphones was developed based on; Screen Size (Inch), Camera Resolution (MP), Internal Memory (GB), and Processor Speed (MHz).

Keywords: smartphone, retail price, tariff, screen size, memory, camera resolution, processor speed, Price
