SA Teligen: Tablet Tariffs Q1 2013 Update

The latest update of Teligen's Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking system revealed a strong growth over the past quarter in number the mobile broadband tariffs offered specifically for tablets, which now account for almost 45% of the total database. The number of tablet devices offered by operators averages around 8, and is expected to stabilize between 9 and 10 by the end of 2013. The number of SIM-only tablet-specific tariffs (i.e. which didn't include a device) increased dramatically from Q3 2012. The on-going introduction of 4G/LTE technology around the world continues to fuel the number of 4G LTE tablet specific tariffs and devices.

Keywords: tablet, iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, prices, devices, mobile internet, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking - March 2013

The March 2013 update of the OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download. The service includes the official OECD mobile broadband baskets for both tablets and laptops, as well as the previously defined Teligen baskets. As with all Teligen Price Benchmarking services, the OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking system includes the capability to input customised user profiles.

The service currently covers 3,516 SIM-only, modem, laptop and tablet plans from 107 mobile network operators in 34 OECD countries. SIM-only plans remain an important element of mobile broadband, and account for around 22% of all plans in this update, up from just under 20% in December 2012. In terms of speed offerings, just over 50% of all plans covered within the service have an advertised maximum download speed of 20 Mb/s and above. Almost a quarter of all plans are 4G/LTE tariffs, while 26% of all offerings include WiFi/Hotspot access.

There have been no changes to the system functionality with this update, however, if you have any difficulty using any of the functions within OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, or would like more information on how to get the most out of the system, we are available to help.

Keywords: OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking - March 2013

As of March 2013, the number of standalone and bundled broadband plans in the Teligen OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking service totalled just over 2,300 - broadly comparable to the December 2012 update. The number of fibre-based packages now stands at just under 31% of all plans, while 63% of all packages are residential offerings, more than half of which are bundled offerings. In terms of speed, almost two thirds of all plans offer download of 15 Mb/s or above, while a quarter have an advertised maximum download speed of 45 Mb/s or above.

In this update, there have been a number of changes to the ISPs covered. In Belgium, Base (owned by KPN) no longer offers residential services for new supply. A new KPN-owned company, SNOW, has been set up to serve residential customers, with a range of multiplay offers, and these have been included in the system. Base will continue to serve new business customers for the time being, and business-based pricing can still be found in the system under Base. In France, an additional operator, SFR has been introduced, in addition to the three ISPs already covered, while in Iceland, ISP Hringiğan has been replaced by Tal - both of these changes being made on the basis of market share considerations. Furthermore, in Czech Republic, ISP GTS Novera has been replaced by T-Mobile, to reflect the fact that GTS Novera focuses primarily on the business market, while T-Mobile addresses both residential and business customers. Finally Polish incumbent operator Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. (also often referred to as TP SA or Polish Telecom) has recently been rebranded to Orange Polska/Poland. The rebranding was initially announced in Q4 2012.

While there have been no changes to system functionality with this update, as ever, if you have any difficulty using any of the functions within OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, or would like more information on how to get the most out of the system, we are available to help.

Keywords: OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

SA Teligen: Tablet Tariffs Q4 2012 Update

The latest update of Teligen's Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking system revealed a very dynamic growth in number the mobile broadband tariffs offered specifically for tablets since Q3 2012. The number of tablet devices offered by operators grew to around 8, and it is expected to stabilize between 9 and 10 later in 2013. The number of SIM-only tablet-specific tariffs (which didn't include a device) increased dramatically from Q3 2012, in part as a result of inclusion of tariffs for South Korea. The introduction of 4G/LTE technology has brought further growth in number of 4G LTE tablet specific tariffs and devices.

Keywords: tablet, iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, prices, devices, mobile internet, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking - December 2012

The December 2012 update of the Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download. The service includes the official OECD mobile broadband baskets for both tablets and laptops, as well as the previously defined Teligen baskets. As with all Teligen Price Benchmarking services, the Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking system includes the capability to input customised user profiles.

The service currently covers 3,506 SIM-only, laptop and tablet plans from 107 mobile network operators in 34 OECD countries. Data from the 3 main providers in South Korea has been included in this update. The increase in the number of plans since September 2012 is in part down to the inclusion of 63 offers from the South Korean providers, but there is a further incremental increase, illustrating the dynamic nature of mobile broadband pricing.

SIM-only plans remain an important element of mobile broadband, and account for just under 20% of all plans in this update. We have seen a significant increase in higher speed mobile broadband offerings. As of December 2012, almost 50% of all plans covered within the service have an advertised maximum download speed of 20 Mb/s and above, compared to 40% in September 2012

There have been no changes to the system functionality with this update, however, if you have any difficulty using any of the functions within Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, or would like more information on how to get the most out of the system, we are available to help.

Keywords: Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

The new update for Emerging Markets: Latin America - Teligen's mobile tariffs benchmarking system - is now available for download. This update covers over 2,200 pre- and post-paid tariffs from 57 operators across 19 countries in the Latin America region, an average of just under 40 packages per operator. Postpaid tariffs continue to dominate, accounting for over 85% of all plans.

The service has been extended to include handset data pricing associated with mobile voice plans, to reflect the recent extension of the OECD mobile voice baskets. Using the drop-down menus in the Main, Per_Country or Per_Provider sheets, users can now, in addition to the original OECD baskets, also choose to see costs for 5 official OECD baskets which include both voice calls and handset data.
Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Update for March 2012

The number of mobile broadband plans in the Teligen Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Service continues to grow. As of March 2012, the service covers 2,973 plans, up from 2,763 plans in the previous update. This represents an increase of some 7.6% and equates to around 26 plans per provider.

As outright device ownership increases (albeit gradually), so does the need for device-free, SIM-only plans, and these have continued to grow steadily, now accounting for over 22% of all mobile broadband plans. While SIM only plans will continue to be important part of a provider's portfolio, the pace of development and speed of change in the device market means that plans including devices will continue to dominate.

Anothupdateer notable trend is the speeds available with mobile broadband. Rollout of 3.5G and 4G/LTE plans continue apace, and are resulting in high speeds comparable with fixed broadband services. As of March 2012, some 843 packages - 28% of all plans - have download speeds of 20 Mb/s and above.

As always, if you need more information on anything covered within our service, or need help in using the system, please let us know.

Keywords: Teligen, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Update for March 2012

The number of Broadband plans in the Teligen Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking service continues to grow. As of March 2012, the service covered 2,240 standalone and bundled broadband plans, up from 2,096 plans in the previous update, and representing an increase of almost 7%. A quarter of all plans are fibre-based offerings, while 50% of all residential plans are now bundled offerings.

There have been some changes to the providers covered by the service, to better reflect more representative providers, based on new market share data. In Greece, Vivodi has been replaced by CYTA, and in Mexico, Cablevision has been replaced by Axtel. Broadband services from Elisa in Finland are now offered through its daughter company, Saunalahti, and this has also been reflected in this update.

There have been no further changes to the system functionality with this update, however, if you have any difficulty using any of the functions within Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, or would like more information on how to get the most out of the system, we are available to help.

Keywords: OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

In this update we have added many new packages and also reflected changes made to previous existing packages, a selection of which are reported below.

In the Mobile baskets, there have been changes to the allowances offered in the Pay & Go Zen range from Proximus in Belgium. Plan ranges have been added from Mobistar in Belgium including "Mobile Pro" and the pay-as-you-go "Tempo Tribe" range. In Canada new plan ranges have been added from Bell including "Fab 10", "Voice & Data" and "Single Line" business plans. In France, the allowances offered have been improved for SFR's RED and Orange's SOSH ranges.
Service Provider Pricing Trends for New Connected Devices

Today, running two or three mobile devices, or even more, is very much the norm for many users. These devices are often complementary rather than any being a viable substitution for each other, and it is often not difficult for users to see the need for connectivity for each. But this extended connectivity brings with it additional costs, which can be hard to justify.

This presentation is an excerpt from Strategy Analytics' Breakfast Presentations at MWC 2012, and looks at some of the challenges that operators are facing in this increasingly connected world, and some of the pricing approaches they are taking.

Keywords: 3G, Communications, Handsets, LTE, Mobile Broadband, Mobile Broadband Devices, Mobile Internet, Mobile Phone, Mobile Voice, smartphone, Tablet, Telecommunications, USB Modems, MWC 2012, Mobile World Congress, Connected Devices, Handset, Data, Plans, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Handset Data Price Benchmarking, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, T-Data, Tariff Outlook, Mobile Voice Online Price Database, Handset Data Price Benchmarking, Fixed Voice Online Price Database, OECD Voice Price Benchmarking, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Teligen Consulting, Price Benchmarking, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking

This report is available to purchase with a credit card for $1399

Mobile broadband - prices falling while download speed and allowances grow

The latest update of the Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking system revealed a sharp decrease in the average monthly cost of using mobile broadband for prepaid tariffs, while cost for postpaid tariffs remained mostly stable. In addition, the average advertised maximum download speed has increased dramatically over the last 3 months of 2011 thanks to LTE deployment and 3G upgrades to HSPA/HSPA+ technologies. The average monthly data allowance for postpaid plans has remained broadly unchanged over the last quarter.

Keywords: mobile broadband, internet, download speed, data, data allowance, price, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, xMBO

Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Update for December 2011

Latest update for Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking; the new name for T-Wireless

The latest update to the service, which is now available to download, shows a much more modest increase in the number of mobile broadband plans. The number of plans in the system now totals 2763, an increase of just under 5% since the previous update.

SIM-only plans continue to be an important part of a mobile operator's portfolio, and one we would expect to see increased focus on going forwards, as consumers who already have their own device don't necessarily want to subscribe to a plan where a further device is included. Almost 20% of all mobile broadband plans covered by the system are SIM-only. Notable countries where SIM-only plans are particularly prominent include Australia - where SIM-only accounts for 28% of all mobile broadband plans, Italy (where SIM-only equals 21% of the total), Mexico (28% are SIM-only), Poland (21% are SIM-only) and the UK (24% are SIM-only)

4G/LTE plans continue to gain ground, with plans now offered from operators in Austria, Australia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Turkey and the US. Pricing strategies vary from operator to operator, however. For example, in Sweden, LTE is being positioned more as a premium service, with prices often being significantly higher than 3G. In the US, by contrast, 4G pricing is on par with 3G, or even with initial price discounts/promotions, as operators try to migrate users to the service as seamlessly as possible.

As always, if you need more information on anything covered within our service, or need help in using the system, please let us know.

Keywords: Teligen, OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking, Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking

Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Update for December 2011

The number of broadband plans within the Teligen Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, while continuing to grow, has increased much more slowly than in previous quarters. As of December 2011, the number of packages covered within the service was up from 2,042 in September, 2011, to 2,096 - a fairly modest rise of 2.7%. Almost all of this growth is attributable to new fibre-based offerings. Similarly, the balance between bundled and standalone plans remains broadly the same, with bundled plans accounting for 48% of all residential plans in December 2011 compared to 47% in September 2011.

The tariffs for Israel have been restructured, to reflect the fact that broadband connections in Israel require both a broadband connection (either from Bezeq, the incumbent provider, or Hot, the Israeli cable operator) plus an ISP connection. The provider names now reflect the provider of the broadband connection and a selected ISP. The Israeli market is characterised by a duopoly in broadband access, but no wholesale market (although this is being looked at). In order to promote competition in the absence of a wholesale market, customers can either buy services directly from an ISP, which will sell a package including the broadband connection, or can buy the two products separately.

There have been no further changes to the system functionality with this update, however, if you have any difficulty using any of the functions within Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, or would like more information on how to get the most out of the system, we are available to help.

Keywords: Teligen, OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking, Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking
